IPL or Diode – Laser Hair Removal (Updated Version)

The Original Kate Jones Underarm Whitening

The Original Kate Jones Underarm Whitening

Wouldn’t it be remarkable to have a hairless armpit like the lady in this picture? Almost all women I know are becoming more and more aware about underarm care, but we aren’t all lucky to be born with virtually no hair in the underarms. So I always get questions about proper hair removal. Honestly, the only way I know how is through laser hair removal. I already tried shaving and waxing (been there, done that!) and all I got were bruises and ingrown hairs.

So other than using the Kate Jones Underarm Whitening Package, it’s important to go through Diode Laser Hair Removal as was my experience. My first try was with Intense Pulsed Light in UST. I underwent 3 or 4 sessions but I had to stop because my hair was no longer responding to the treatment.  This is probably the first generation IPL since there are new ones in the market that purportedly offers better treatment. Intense Pulse Light (IPL) machines are not lasers – they are basically light bulb (Xenon Flashlamp). These machines use a highly concentrated beam of traditional incoherent light, often in conjunction with a cream or gel, to burn the hair shaft. A serious flaw with these systems is that they lack the laser’s ability to produce a selective bandwidth of light that will only affect the hair shaft (selective photothermolysis). IPLs produce a wide bandwidth of light that can heat up all of the surrounding tissue, making it less effective in disabling hair and putting the patient at a higher risk for burns, especially on darker skin.  A good brand can do skin rejuvenation, treat epidermal/dermal lesion, pigmentations and the like.  Just remember that you only get what you paid for.  If you are paying for a treatment at P300/session treatment that comes in a wonderful package, don’t expect too much.  Be happy your skin did not get burned 🙂

IPL devices are generally cheaper than laser devices, which is why many clinics choose to use them.  Generally, true hair removal lasers like Alexandrite, Diode Array, and Long Pulsed ND:Yag tend to achieve better and faster results than IPLs. Treatment interval is between 4 to 8 weeks for a minimum of 6 to 8 sessions.  Any interval earlier than 4 weeks just means that you are being treated using a low powered machine being sold for home-use like Silk’N or Elite that some salons and clinics use.  Make sure to undergo a consultation before making an educated decision.  Ask for the pros and cons, and clarify your expectations. Remember that there are clinics now a days that uses Diode that are underpowered from China.  Even I get offers from laser machine manufacturers!

2 Things to Look For:

– Operator, whether dermatologist or nurse, should have extensive experience.

– The clinic should use a reputable brand of Diode machine.

The Diode laser hair removal treatment  worked in permanently reducing the hair in my axilla or underarms.  It is said that Diode is the Gold Standard in laser hair removal which 810 nm wavelength, this is true in the US where most patients have lighter skin tone – type I-III. Since mine is type 3, I was the perfect candidate. Filipinas or other Asians with type 4 skins can still undergo the treatment using Diode, but the energy level may be significantly reduced depending on your tolerance and your skin’s reaction to being lased.  My dermatologist would usually increase every session because I have high pain tolerance.   The new Diode Technology now has the option to provide desirable results with less pain for all Skin Types.  Facial Care Center Makati has this machine.  Skin House Beauty and Laser Clinic in Q.C. also has this machine (You may contact  0917  8987546 or 5424106).

Since dermatologists have different opinions with these machines.  I suggest that you go to a dermatologist who has access to both IPL and Diode for better understanding.

Hair grows in three distinct cycles. First, the active or growth cycle (Anagen); next, the dormant cycle (Catagen) and, finally, the fall-out or shedding cycle (Telogen). Laser Hair Removal is most effective during the growth cycle (Anagen).  The perfect time to do the treatment is during the Anagen stage.  So make sure not to wax or pluck 4 weeks prior to laser hair removal treatment.

One of the advantages of diode lasers is that their wavelength can be tuned by altering certain parameters such as the current applied to the semiconductor.

Clinical data on the use of the diode laser for epilation suggest that the diode has specific advantages when treating specific hair colours and skin types. The older Diode machine works well for darker hair and lighter skin tone.  The new Diode system can now be  effectively used for all skin types.  Just look for the machine with in-motion and HR technology.

Diode is the Gold Standard for laser hair removal.

The intense pulsed light technology is non coherent laser. The wavelength, exposure duration, and energy level are that chosen to selectively damage targeted hair follicles with minimum damage to the surrounding tissue. The intense pulsed light is absorbed by the hair follicles, resulting in their heating.

The follicles are damaged and these damaged follicles result in epilation. There are many parameters of the energy emitted from the intense pulsed light machine that can be adjusted by the operator, which allows significant flexibilty of treatment, thereby personalising the therapy and minimising side effects.

Treatment is not compatible with concurrent sun exposure and certain hair or skin colours may result in differing results. Some patients feel mild discomfort during treatment. Multiple treatments are required, given over several months, with progressive clearing over time.

This is thought to be long term, rather than permanent.

Hey would you recommend the Xemos laser hair removal or the finally free permanent hair removal using a radio frequency? Those are cheaper than the treatment session and you can use it at the convenience of your home too. I haven’t tried it and I would like to ask Ms. Kate’s opinion on it. I ask one of the laser hair removal expert (just by chatting) but he mentioned that the Xemos is using diode laser which is a lower energy tech however it might not be recommended as it can burn my skin. So i was thinking of using the radio frequency instead. Watchutink Ms Kate?

  19. admin says:

Trish: The hair may still go back after IPL. It is not consistent for hair removal unlike the Diode which provides a deeper penetration at 810nm. Anyway, what underarm whitening have you tried in the past?

Thank u for posting this efficiency comparison between IPL & Laser. I regularly get full brazillian waxes on a 5-6 weeks insterval for almost a year now and so far I am happy with the results esp hygienewise! Is diode laser treatment recommended on these areas? I really, really love to get rid of these hairs “permanently” if possible. I need your advise please and thank you in advance.
