IV Glutathione: To Take, or Not To Take?

In response to the innumerable inquiry about IV Glutathione, I asked a friend who happens to do IV Glutathione treatment. My resource person, Dr. Victor Yap is a professor at DLSU-Cavite and is with the esteemed QC Eye Center. According to Healthline.Com, Glutathione is a major antioxidant highly active in human lungs and many other organ systems and tissues. It has many reported uses. It has a critical role in protecting cells from oxidative stress and maintaining the immune system. Higher blood levels of Glutathione have been associated with better health in elderly people, but the exact association between Glutathione and the aging process has not been determined. This article is meant to educate clients or patients with the risks and benefits involved. In the Philippines, women, specifically beauty conscious women use this in the hope that this will lighten their skin tone.

    • Is IV Glutathione relatively safe?

      Answer – Yes if given properly by a trained professional like a doctor. Glutathione is 100% safe but if not properly done, particularly those who do it themselves may run the risk of dangers like infection, heart attack and strokes.

        • Does it really whiten the skin? If so, how long will it take for a patient to see the effect of IV Glutathione? If not, what then are the other benefits of taking it?

          Answer – Skin whitening is actually an effect of Glutathione over the melanin pigment producing gland that is responsible for skin color pigment and tone. Glutathione reduces stimulation of melanin and pigment production making the skin tone less pigment deposits leading to a whiter skin tone or color. Effects on patients for whitening will depend on how much darkness in pigments of skin tone [is] present. Visible effects of skin tone change are usually noticeable after the third to fourth sessions of intravenous injection of Glutathione. Glutathione is an anti-oxidant naturally present in our body at the time we are born. However, as we grow older, the supply of Glutathione decreases at is being used up in our body cell metabolism. Thus, the use of injectable Glutathione is very useful in rejuvenating the cells in our whole body, from head to toe. It also lessens, if not removes stress making us feel younger and more active. It also helps liver cells to regenerate from damages caused by prolong alcohol or fatty food intake.

            • What brand of IV Glutathione does your clinic use? Would you suggest IV than the oral form? What the pros and cons?

              Answer – The Glutathione for injection that I prefer to use is made by the drug company Roche of Switzerland. Orally given Glutathione are not as effective as that given by injection, because oral glutathione undergo first pass effect in the stomach. This means that the drug is broken down by acid in the stomach when taken orally and only 20% of the active part of the drug is absorbed in the body, unlike that given by injection wherein 100% is absorbed automatically.

              1. When Glutathione is taken in its oral form, it is usually suggested to take vitamin C. Is it the same with IV? You mentioned that collagen injection will also help with skin wellness. How so?

              Answer – Both injected or orally taken Glutathione may need Vitamin C for better and prolonged action. The use of collagen ingested together with Glutathione helps the skin to be firmer, and also enhances the effect of Glutathione making the person much younger looking.

                • Can young girls have this treatment done? What is the age bracket of those who are allowed to undergo this procedure?

                  Answer – Normally not given to young individuals. The suggestion is atleast 30 years of age, but can be given to as young as 25.

                    • What can you advice those who buy these Gluta vials on their own?

                      Answer – Better have a professional do it for you to avoid the risk of having the negative side effect like heart attack, stroke, or even death. Other risk involved when performed by a nurse is hematoma or bruises in the place where it was injected “dahil sa pumuputok na ugat”.

                        Victoria R there are some women who claim that their skin whitened with Glutathione. There is no harm in trying. You may also want to consider kojic acid soap and sun block for skin whitening.
